Õppis Riia kubermangugümnaasiumis, seejärel Tartu ülikoolis ajalugu 1870–1874, täiendas end Göttingenis 1873–1875 (dr. phil. 1875) ning Leipzigis ja Berliinis 1875–1876. Oli Riia kubermangugümnaasiumis ajaloo ülemõpetaja 1878–1889, Riia Ajaloo ja Muinasteaduse Seltsi sekretär 1885. a-st, Riia linnaarhivaar a-st 1890. Arvukate seltside liige.
