The Collection of Manuscripts is the oldest manuscript collection in the University of Tartu Library. It includes Western European and Oriental manuscript codices or their fragments since the 8th/9th century, charters, Baltic legal and historical sources, as well as other manuscripts in the field of history of culture and science. A number of manuscripts have been separated from The Collection of Manuscripts to form individual archival collections, e.g. Mscr. 971 → F 25 (Christiani, Titus. Personal archive). The sign of The Collection of Manuscripts is Mscr. On older slips in the catalogue, it is missing from the manuscript´s call number and only the number of the manuscript appears at the top of the slip, e.g. 294. The slip catalogue of The Collection of Manuscripts is no longer supplemented, all new acquisitions are described in the e-catalogue ESTER.
