Library is Again Open After Summer

27.08.2018

On Monday 27 August, the University of Tartu Library again opened its doors to all readers. This summer the library was closed for two months to allow the renovation to progress as quickly as possible. From now on, the library is on workdays open already from 9 o’clock in the morning.

“Closing the library for summer was unavoidable, so that the builders could go on with their work,” said Martin Hallik, the Director of the UT Library. “During this time the renovation progressed very quickly and the work is ahead of its schedule. Renovation will be completed at the beginning of September.”

The next step will be the furnishing of renovated rooms, cleaning of the reading room books and moving everything to their right places.

The white hall and group work rooms, as well as the rooms of the conference centre on the second floor are already open. Finishing touches are now put to the 3rd floor reading rooms and private work rooms.

“We would like to open all public rooms of our library approximately at the end of October,” Hallik explained. “By that time all books will be shelved and the students can concentrate on their studies in quiet reading rooms.”

Until then, the students are encouraged to use all the opportunities that the library offers.

“The spring semester proved that the students readily accepted and adapted to the renewed white hall on the second floor, finding enough space for studying there. Rooms for group work and discussions can be booked on our webpage,” Hallik added.  UT students can use group work rooms free of charge.

During the renovation period, the books of the reading room collections can be requested from the e-catalogue ESTER. The students can also use different databases and ask subject librarians for help in information search. Free request via interlibrary loan applies to all books and journals whose location in the e-catalogue ESTER is ’UTL Stacks (temporarily unavailable)’.
