The University of Tartu Library has announced the 2026 funding call to support the publication of scientific articles in high-quality open access journals. Applications may be submitted from the moment a confirmation letter has been received from the journal and will be accepted until the allocated funds are exhausted. The grant covers 50% of the publication costs and is available to University of Tartu doctoral researchers and academic staff who meet the conditions of the call.
“This support provides a solid foundation for early-career researchers who are just starting out,” said Mari Moora, Vice Rector for Research at the University of Tartu. “High-quality open publications in leading disciplinary journals form the cornerstone for building successful grant applications and a successful academic career.”
Funding may be applied for articles that have received a confirmation letter from the journal as of 1 January 2026. The publication must appear in a Q1-category journal (indexed in Web of Science or Scopus) and be listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Articles published in journals by the publisher MDPI are not eligible for funding. As an exception, publications in the prestigious journals Nature and Science are supported, provided that all other requirements are met. The applicant must be the corresponding author of the publication and a member of the University of Tartu’s academic staff or a doctoral researcher. Each author may receive funding for up to two articles per year.
The funded articles will be preserved in the University of Tartu digital archive ADA and given enhanced visibility through the university’s communication channels. The application form, detailed guidelines, and additional information are available on the library’s website. The total volume of the support fund is €100,000, which is expected to support the publication of approximately 50 high-quality scientific articles.
Open access makes research more transparent and accelerates the dissemination of knowledge. Support from the University of Tartu Development Fund helps reduce inequalities in access to publications and promotes the publication of research results in top-tier journals.
