The exhibition to celebrate the 70th jubilee of Tõnu Kollo, the mathematician and statistician, will be opened on the second floor of the UT Library on 1 June at 15.00.

Tõnu Kollo was born in Talliku village, eastern part of Saaremaa Island on 1 June 1948. He graduated from the Orissaare Secondary School with silver medal in 1966 and continued his studies at the University of Tartu, specialising in applied mathematics. His diploma thesis on probability theory inspired him to concentrate his further research on probability theory and statistics. Kollo defended his Candidate’s degree in this field at the Vilnius University in 1979.

Tõnu Kollo’s professional life has been related only with the University of Tartu where he has passed all career levels from a laboratory technician to the professor; he also was the last dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics. In 2007 he was given the Research Award of the Estonian Republic on exact sciences for his monograph "Multivariate Statistical Models Based on Matrix Technique"

The exhibition at the UT Library presents the studies and the teaching and research activities of professor Kollo, as well as gives the idea of his hobbies as an active bibliophile and volleyball player. He is a person who is interested in the life and progress of the university, and he pays much attention to the development of professional terminology and statistics literacy.
