25.11.2019

University of Tartu Library celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Estonian national university with the exhibition of doctoral theses, defended in 2019.

At the ceremonial meeting, held in the UT Assembly Hall on 1 December, 138 scholars who have defended their doctoral dissertations during the year will be awarded their degrees. Printed dissertations of these new doctors are now exhibited in the 2nd floor hall of the library. 25 dissertations were defended in the humanities, 21 in social sciences, 27 in medical sciences and 65 in natural and exact sciences; 11 of them were written in Estonian, 123 in English, three in Russian and one in German.

“The number of the doctoral theses is impressive,” said Krista Aru, the Director of the UT Library. “I am sure that among the authors of these works there are many young researchers who will achieve a lot in the coming years. We also hope that the exhibition will inspire the students of today not only to aim at excellent research results, but also to search for answers how to make the world a better, safer and a more sustainable place.”

Electronic versions of the dissertations are accessible for all via the UT digital archive DSpace, which presently includes 2899 e-publications of dissertations.

The exhibition was compiled by the librarian Mare Pikkel and it will be open until 30 December.
