Exhibition "Where are you going, where are you all going?!... Juhan Luiga 150" will be opened in the library
On March 31st at 3 pm, a Juhan Luiga-themed exhibition titled "Where are you going, where are you all going?!... Juhan Luiga 150" will be opened on the third floor of the library.
Luiga, who had a medical education, is primarily known as an influential opinion leader in Estonian culture. Starting from 1904, he wrote articles and essays on literature and politics. His writings, which were both polemical and personal, occasionally sarcastic and ironic, reflected the societal changes that occurred in the early 20th century.
Luiga worked as a psychiatrist at the Tartu nerve clinic. He was also the chairman of the Estonian Medical Association, which was founded in 1921, and one of the founders of the journal Eesti Arst and the Estonian Health Care Museum.
In addition to collections of articles and works written by Juhan Luiga, the exhibition dedicated to his 150th birthday features some of his personal belongings, books he owned, as well as photographs and Nikolai Triik's charcoal drawing of Luiga, a contemporary artist from Pallas.
During the exhibition's opening, literary scholar Sirje Olesk will give a brief lecture on Luiga and his era, while Dr. Neeme Tõnisson, a member of the Estonian Medical Association Executive Committee, will speak about Luiga's contribution to Estonian medical history.
The exhibition "Where are you going, where are you all going?!... Juhan Luiga 150" was curated by Marianne Tiik and designed by Lilian Mengel. It will be on display at the library until the end of May.
