In March, six galleries at the University of Tartu launched a series of exhibitions and events called "Order and Chaos" to deepen cooperation and foster synergy between science and the arts. The idea for the joint effort was aided by the previous experience of the independently operating galleries in various university buildings and the belief that modern science requires both precision knowledge and experimentation and creative freedom.
The idea for the series of events linking science and the arts arose from the need to emphasize the connections between art and science as part of Tartu 2024. The themes of the "Order and Chaos" series include Finno-Ugric culture, the universe, semiotics, and geometry, which connect various scientific fields and the arts. The series offers dialogues between scientists and artists, discussions, and artworks, and exhibits the results at the university's gallery exhibitions.
The idea, which emerged at the beginning of 2023, creates a connection between the previously separate galleries in Delta House, Omicum, Physicum, Philosophicum, Tartu Observatory and UT Library.
The initiative group of the "Order and Chaos" series includes Krista Aru and Lilian Mengel (University of Tartu Library), Maret Einasto and Marja-Liisa Plats (Tartu Observatory), Maarja Nõmmik (Philosophicum), Jaak Kikas (Physicum), Sulev Kuuse (Omicum), and Kärt Summatavet (Delta).
The first collaborative exhibition will open on Tuesday, March 28 at 6:00 PM at the University of Tartu Library. Physicist and artist Martin Vällik's photo exhibition "MOON" was exhibited at Delta House in autumn of 2022. The successful exhibition is now shared with the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science Gallery (ATI, curated by Kärt Summatavet) at the library.
