On Thursday, March 23, a bookbinding exhibition entitled "Hidden Half. From Handicraft Binding to Machine Production" will be opened in the exhibition hall of the library.
According to Tiia Nurmsalu, one of the co-curators of the exhibition, the new exhibition is dedicated to the physical form of the book and its history of development. "We want to show how the book, while retaining its essence, has changed over centuries," Nurmsalu said. "Undoubtedly, the biggest impact on this has been the developments in society, including the introduction of new materials."
The curators have highlighted the most important changes that have led to the book taking the form that we know it today. The exhibition showcases examples from the collections of the university library as well as generalizing models of bookbinding that visitors can examine more closely themselves.
The exhibition "Hidden Side. From Handicraft Bookbinding to Machine Production" was curated by Tiia Nurmsalu, Kadri Tammur, Kaspar Kolk, Dorel Sabre and Moonika Teemus and designed by Lilian Mengel.
The exhibition opens on March 23 at 4 pm and can be viewed until June 18. The exhibition hall is open on weekdays from 10 am to 7 pm and on weekends from 12 pm to 6 pm.
The exhibition was supported by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
