On Wednesday, October 25th, artist Kristel Schwede will open the exhibition "Those Horizons" on the third floor of the library.
The paintings and photo treatments in the exhibition are symbolic milestones in the artist's creative journey. They include works from her first major solo exhibition, "Shared Landscapes" (UT Physicum Art Gallery, 2019), "Area / À la. Visual Territories" (Kastellaani Gallery, 2021), "Art Addict in the Art Space (Positiiv Gallery, 2022), and new paintings created this year.
The exhibition "Those Horizons" is a mental journey through the landscape of beginnings and endings associated with dreams, longings, and creative processes. The horizon, the apparent line in the distance where the sky and the land or water surface seem to meet, is the focal point of the exhibition.
In words, it's an apparent, limiting, dividing line that balances the primal call of infinity with the inevitability of acceptance. The interplay between appearance and reality are essential components of every artwork, and depending on the perspective, unit of time, or the viewer's readiness, they can change their nature, be visible and tangible, or hide in the hidden intricacies of perception.
"Those Horizons" is Schwede's seventh solo exhibition, and its location in the university library holds special significance for her. Her first field of study was library science (BA) and information science (MA). She continues to study visual arts through open academy courses at the Estonian Academy of Arts and Tallinn University.
Kristel Schwede (1963) is an artist, cultural journalist, publisher (Photo Magazine Positiiv), and the gallery Positiiv gallery owner-curator. As an artist, she is interested in human-made environments, creative processes, and the gray area of collective creation. As a curator, she is intrigued by the mental journeys that art viewers may experience when looking at a meaningful work or exhibition. Schwede has participated in various group exhibitions, and her works can be found in private collections in Estonia, Germany, and France.
