UT Library invites everyone to birthday celebrations

On Friday, 17 June the University of Tartu Library celebrates its 220-th anniversary. All people are invited to celebrate this event.

“Of course, for students the library is like a second home," said the UT Library Director Krista Aru. “But our building is a kind of landmark for all inhabitants of Tartu as well as the visitors who come here to work or just read books." According to Aru, the presence of different generations who are in the library side by side from day to day evidences that this place is a meeting point. "One can meet people or knowledge. The library environment continues to inspire and foster concentrating - just like 220 years ago," she added.

On 17 june at 11 a.m. all people are invited to join for the celebrations in front of the library. There will be music, greetings and congratulations from other institutions of Tartu, also coffee and cake. The library also presents its recently published yearbook.

At 1 p.m. everyone who is interested can join guided tours to the music department and different stacks where readers usually do not have an access.

23 June 1802, the day when the first loan of books was registered the loans diary, is held as the foundation day of the library, which at that time had 4000 volumes. The first Director of the Library was a Professor of German origin Johann Karl Simon Morgenstern. Today the library holds about 4 million publications of different types.
