Open Access Week focuses on introducing the possibilities of open science and climate justice

The University of Tartu Library participates in the international Open Access Week to introduce and increase the use and access to the results of scholarly research. This year’s theme “Open for climate justice" seeks to encourage connection and collaboration among the climate movement and the international open community.

In addition to the UT Library, the information desks to introduce open science have been set up also in the libraries of the Estonian University of Life Sciences, Tallinn University of Technology and Tallinn University.

The theme „Open for climate justice“ aims at drawing our attention to the fact that the climate crisis has far-reaching effects and according to UN, the impacts are “not be[ing] borne equally or fairly, between rich and poor, women and men, and older and younger generations”. These power imbalances also affect communities’ abilities to produce, disseminate, and use knowledge around the climate crisis. Openness can create pathways to more equitable knowledge sharing and serve as a means to address the inequities that shape the impacts of climate change and our response to them.

On 26 October at 11 a.m a workshop „How do you know that there is a global warming?“ is organised by a UT researcher and  environmental activist Madis Vasser. The topics to be discussed include goals of climate neutrality, measuring and calculating greenhouse gas (GHG) and whether it is possible to measure and validate them with the means of open science. The workshop will take place in Kodavere seminar room. People who think that we have enough time to deal with climate issues as well as people who think that we have already surpassed the critical level of global warming are all welcome to participate.
