UT Library Calendar for 2024 introduces historical maps of Tartu

The UT Library Calendar for 2024 focuses on Tartu, the European capital of culture next year, and displays the growth and development of the city over three centuries.

The maps show us how at the beginning, the small town of Tartu fitted easily within its walls, but soon overflew them in all directions, finding new space for growing on the fields of the surrounding manors. We can see how the streets of the town grew longer, how new neighbourhoods emerged one by one and started developing. “We hope that these maps will offer joy of discovery and fun of comparison for many natives of Tartu and its guests,” said the compiler of the calendar Marika Liivamägi. “In order to better appreciate the familiarity of today we should also remember how it began.”

The oldest dated map in the calendar was made in 1645, the newest originates from 1941. All the maps were selected from the Library collections of maps and rare materials.

The UT Library Calendar 2024 was compiled and translated by Marika Liivamägi and designed by Lilian Mengel.

The Calendar is on sale at the Library information point and in the e-bookshop.
