The library’s traditional Christmas fair, held this year on Friday, 12 December, will have a cat-themed focus. The fair will offer a variety of handmade items, food products, cosmetics and books – all in one way or another related to cats.
According to Lilian Mengel, head of the department of cultural environment, the idea for a cat-themed fair grew out of the library’s 2026 calendar and an upcoming exhibition, both of which also feature cats. “There are many ordinary Christmas fairs, so we thought that a themed fair could inspire the vendors as well,” she said, adding that finding participants was no problem. “Surprisingly quickly, everyone managed to adapt their products to the feline theme. I believe this year’s fair will be truly distinctive – appealing both to devoted cat lovers and to those for whom a cat is simply one animal among many.”
The fair will offer cat-themed bags, cards, jewellery, socks and other items. Several vendors will also donate their proceeds to support a shelter of homeless cats. In addition, the newly published library calendars and postcards featuring cat photos will be available, as well as souvenirs from the University of Tartu Museum.
The Christmas fair will take place on 12 December in the lobby on the library’s first floor and will be open from 11:00 to 18:00.
