University of Tartu Library is asking students, researchers and lecturers to suggest which books and learning materials, written by Estonian authors, should be digitised in the first order. Digitisation will be carried out under the four-year-long European project EODOPEN, aiming at making 15 000 texts from the 20th and 21st centuries digitally accessible to all in the digital format.

An online platform named Human Kinetics Library is open for trial, lasting until 31th May. The online platform - Human Kinetics Library - which is dedicated to the teaching, research and understanding of sport, kinesiology, and exercise science. The platform features over 150 eBooks, alongside ancillary materials for students. Please send your feedback to the address [email protected]

Due to the emergency situation and closing of universities, several publishing houses and databases gave free access to their materials that could be used by the students, researchers and employees of the University of Tartu. In case of some databeses, free access has been extended also after the emergency period.

UT Library is closed due to the emergency situation, but starting from Wednesday, 25 March, users can request books via the e-catalogue ESTER. The requested books can be picked up from the Smart Lockers in the library lobby.

Prime Minister Jüri Ratas visited the University of Tartu Library on 6 March to get an overview of the renovated building, which was reopened at the end of 2018. The Prime Minister met the director Krista Aru to discuss the role and opportunities of the libraries in the present educational and research situation.

The traditional two-day winter seminar of memory institutions, organised by the UT Library at Kääriku on 19-20 March, will concentrate on the topics of opening up the collections.

The exhibition to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the writer Andres Ehin will be opened in the UT Library on Thursday, 12 March. The exhibition gives an overview of Ehin’s poetry as well as his activities as a translator. At the opening event, Andres Ehin’s life and works will be introduced by his wife, the poet and translator Ly Seppel-Ehin, and his daughter, the poet Kristiina Ehin. Visitors of the exhibition can also listen to the writer reading his poems – his voice comes from the vinyl album, recorded in 1973.

Dear readers! Due to the national holiday in Estonia, on Sunday, 23 February the library is open from 12 until 15 and on Monday, 24 February the library is closed.

The exhibition of paintings “Long shadows” to celebrate the 80th birthday of the artist Liive Koppel can be viewed on the third floor of the UT Library. Estonian nature is the essential feature of Liive Koppel’s paintings. “My works do not need much contemplation, I just paint outdoors and townscapes, flowers, and still life,” said the artist. “These are the things that talk to me. I love to be old-fashioned and I do not want to dissolve under the pressure of modern art, which is mostly based on hedonistic spirit.”

Three young artists, Saskia Kolberg from Jaan Poska Gymnasium, and Birgit Allekõrs and Priyanka Singh from Miina Härma Gymnasium show their works next to the UT Library Conference Hall.

The exhibition “Over the Years” shows paintings by the famous Estonian artist Epp-Maria Kokamägi in the exhibition hall of the University of Tartu Library.

On 27 January the University of Tartu Library started a pilot project aiming to offer its users the possibility to return books into any library in the UT Library network. In addition to the main library, all the university’s specialist libraries that are located in Tartu, participate in the pilot project.

Photo exhibition “Kiltsi of the Old Times”, also displaying books of the writers who have been born or are living in the Kiltsi borough, can be viewed on the second floor exhibition area of the UT Library. The exhibition gives an overview of the historical development of the Kiltsi borough and displays books written by people who have or have had connections with Kiltsi. Linking together the creative impulses of the books, their authors and the place on the map posed an exciting challenge for the creator of the exhibition.

The travelling exhibition for the centenary of Eesti Pank is now in the library of the University of Tartu. The exhibition uses contrasting examples to tell the story in simple terms of the changes over a century in the purchasing power of the people of Estonia, and how money moves between people.

From 6 January until 19 January UT Library in cooperation with the Student Council organizes a traditional Night Library. During these two weeks the library is open until midnight.
