Starting from today, you can use the chat window on the UT Library web-page to chat with librarians in real time, to ask questions about library services and collections. You will receive a prompt answer on Mon–Fri, 9–20. Questions asked outside the library hours will be answered by e-mail at the earliest possibility. Chat will work both in Estonian and in English.

After signing the contract, AS YIT Ehitus begins with the reconstruction works of the UT Library, which includes renovating the inside and outside of the library. The library will be closed from 23 June to around 4 October 2016. Until then, the library offers users their digital collections, as of August also ordering from the open collections, online consultation and other online services. Books can be returned during the renovation.

The UT Library wants to give thanks to all participants in the international user satisfaction survey. We received valuable information and feedback which will enable us to upgrade the quality of our services and to make our library space more user-friendly. We congratulate the seven lucky prize winners, who will get library souvenirs and comfortable knitted jumpers with the university logo.

To commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the 16th century Swiss universal scholar Conrad Gessner, the Zurich State Museum holds a special exhibition “Conrad Gessner (1516-1565)”. The exhibition is open from 17 March to 19 June 2016. (More information: http://www.gessner500.ch/).

On 21.03-21.04.2016, The University of Tartu Library participates in an international user satisfaction survey. Quality of library services is measured using the LibQUAL+ method developed by the American Association of Research Libraries. A number of libraries from Europe and the USA participate in the survey, the Estonian participants include the University of Tartu Library, the Tallinn University of Technology Library and the National Library.

UT Library has for already 19 times invited specialists from Estonian memory institutions to meet at the winter seminar in Kääriku. This year, the seminar is titled “Memory Institution – an Efficient Supporter of Research”. On 15 and 16 March, the participants analyse the role of libraries and memory institutions in research activities and discuss the ways of opening their collections and bringing research information quickly and easily to their users.

EBSCO e-book collection Academic Collection is open for trial up to 31 May at http://search.ebscohost.com.ezproxy.utlib.ut.ee/. The collection contains e-books on all fields of science, including such well-known publishers as Brill, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Routledge, Peter Lang, Royal Society of Chemistry, World Scientific Publishing Company, Nova Science Publishers, Inc., National Academies Press and others.

The sale will be held under the main entrance hall staircase, in the former stacks of the textbook collection, on 10 and 11 February from 12.00 to 18.00. There are textbooks, monographs and dictionaries on many subjects and in many languages, as well as works of fiction. Everyone is welcome!

The new book Tracing a Cultural Historical Treasure: Konrad Gessner’s Plant Drawings at the University of Tartu Library presents an engaging overview of the birth and fate of the unique collection of plant drawings made by Konrad Gessner, a universal Swiss scholar of the 16th century, and introduces the part of the collection which arrived in the UT Library in 1804.

As of 29 December, the UT Library website https://utlib.ut.ee/en has a new content and look. According to the project manager of the new website, UT Web Administrator Valmar Evert and Head of UT Library Department of Information Systems Anneli Sepp, there were substantial and technical reasons for the changes: “The structure of the new website is based on the needs of external users for whom finding information has been made as easy and logical as possible.”

Labrador retriever Mona and her handler Maria, golden retriever Arabella and her handler Anette, Newfoundland dog Leero and handler Meeli, and Afghan hound Tentel and Jane will help and support you in studying. All dogs have had a special training and passed necessary exams. Revise and read out your notes to them, and pat and hug them to relieve stress and gain good feelings.

Starting from 4 January, the UT Library in cooperation with the UT Student Council is open three hours longer from Monday to Thursday during three weeks. The library is open from 9:00 to 01:00.
